Esopo, the legendary figure of the 6th century BC, was almost a mythical character mentioned by Herodotus in his Histories, as well as by Aristophanes, Plato, and various Greek philosophers and authors. His biographical text was written by La Fontaine in Vie de Esope le Phrygien, and a fictional biography, The Life of Aesop, was produced in 1490 by the Byzantine monk Planude. Esopo was a slave who was freed by his last master, Xanthus. Despite his strange appearance - it is said that he was hunchbacked - he had the gift of words and the ability to tell stories where the characters were animals, always ending with moral lessons.
By the 5th century BC, Esop's fables were being published and cited by several authors. Resisting the test of time - for over two thousand years now - Esop's Fables have inspired La Fontaine and have been the subject of thousands of citations throughout history. "The Fox and the Grapes" is one of the most well-known examples of the hundreds of fables that he produced over the centuries.
