Félix María Serafín Sánchez de Samaniego Zabala, born on October 12, 1745 in Laguardia, Álava, and passing away in the same place on August 11, 1801 at the age of 56, was a renowned Spanish writer known for his fables. The influence of his French education is evident in his most well-known work: Fábulas en verso castellano para el uso del Real Seminario Bascongado (1781), which consists of 157 fables divided into 9 books. Samaniego, inspired by the great fabulists Phaedrus, Aesop, and La Fontaine, uses his fables to mock human flaws.
In his fables, Samaniego cleverly criticizes prominent figures, social habits, and questionable political attitudes with subtle yet ruthless satire. He also wrote a collection of erotic poetry, characterized by its humorous and risqué nature, which was first published under the title of El jardín de Venus.
